Woodcock Sir Thomas cropped

Sir Thomas Woodcock, KCVO, Garter King of Arms, retired from the College of Arms on 30 June 2021. He graduated from Durham University, and then read for an LLB at Cambridge, before being called to the Bar at the Inner Temple. In 1975 he joined the heraldic practice of Sir Anthony Wagner, Garter King of Arms, and was appointed Rouge Croix Pursuivant in 1978. He became Somerset Herald in 1982. In 1997 he was promoted to Norroy and Ulster King of Arms, and was appointed Garter Principal King of Arms on 1 April 2010 in succession to Sir Peter Gwynn-Jones. He was Librarian of the College of Arms until 2010, overseeing the archive and conservation departments. Sir Thomas was Genealogist of the Order of the Bath and of the Order of St John; and served as Inspector of Regimental Colours, and of RAF Badges, as well as being Advisor on Naval Heraldry to the Royal Navy from 1996 to 2021. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and has published widely on heraldic and related subjects; and he was the editor of the Dictionary of British Arms, bringing to publication decades of work by different scholars on sources for medieval heraldry. He was appointed Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order in 1996, being promoted to Commander in 2011 and Knight Commander of the Order in 2021. He has been a Deputy Lieutenant for Lancashire since 2005.

Sir Thomas Woodcock is succeeded by David Vines White, now Garter King of Arms. David White was appointed Rouge Croix Pursuivant in 1995 and was promoted to Somerset Herald in 2004. He was the Registrar of the College of Arms from 2014 to 2021. The London Gazette notice of his appointment can be seen here.

Recently Recorded Pedigrees

ABNEY and CHAPMAN: a pedigree of eight generations has been placed on official record which is headed by Paul Abney (born 1744) and by Eleanor Hamilton his wife. Their granddaughter Sophia was married in 1817 to John Chapman of Edgefield District, South Carolina, USA, and had issue including Andrew Mills Chapman of Edgefield District (born 1825), from whom the pedigree descends to the present day. BOWATER: a pedigree of four generations is headed by Sir Eric Vansittart Bowater (born 1895). Cross-referenced to Baronets Pedigrees 13/120. College reference: Surrey 32/349.

COLVIN: a pedigree of five generations is headed by Beale Blackwell Colvin of Pishobury, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire and of Mangham’s Hall, Waltham Holy Cross, Essex. He was married in 1853 to Emma Elizabeth daughter of Daniel Britten of Kenswick, Worcestershire and of Hanover Terrace, Westminster, London. Connected to PONSONBY. EDWARDS, DARBY, RATCLIFF and FAIRHEAD: a pedigree of eleven generations shows a descent from William Edwards of The Elms in the parish of Toppesfield, Essex, who married in 1701 Elizabeth daughter of George Gent of Moyns Hall, parish of Steeple Bumpstead, Essex. Their daughter Mary married in 1734 John Darby of Toppesfield, from whom the pedigree descends to Mary Louise, wife of Samuel Ratcliff. Their daughter Maude Mary married in 1897 Edwin Fairhead of Farnbridge Hall, White Notley, Essex. The pedigree then descends to the present day. College reference: Norfolk 52/202.

GARROD and BOSCOMBE: a pedigree shows a descent to the present day, via the BOSCOMBE family, from Ralph Vince Garrod of Saratoga, Santa Clara County, California, USA, who was married in 1916 to Emma daughter of Ferdinand Stolte. College reference: Surrey 32/350.

HUNT: a pedigree of five generations shows the descent to the present day from Gerald Owen Hunt of Edinburgh Crescent, Colombo, Ceylon (diedd 1939), and his wife Helen Margaret Colquhoun daughter of Arthur Colquhoun Balloch of Woking, Surrey. O’KEEFE and GURLEY: a pedigree sets out three generations headed by Laurence Eugene O’Keefe of Atlanta, Georgia, USA (born 1835 in Ireland), and from Sarah Corrinne his wife daughter of John Thomas Cox. Their granddaughter Sarah Cox married Kenneth Rice Gurley of Atlanta, from whom the pedigree descends three further generations to the present day. College reference: Norfolk 52/207.

Ecclesiastical Household ACEcclesiastical Hats: hats which may be used in lieu of Helms and Crests by certain clergy of the Anglican Communion, were established by Warrant of the Earl Marshal dated 21 December 1976, and may be seen here. Insignia which may be used in connexion with the personal arms of prelates and clergy of the Roman Catholic Church, were established by Warrant of the Earl Marshal dated 17 July 1967, and may be seen here. Illustrated left is an example of the hat charged with a Tudor Rose, worn by members of Her Majesty's Ecclesiastical Household.
