RantzenWILCOXA grant of Arms was made to Dame Esther Louise RANTZEN, DBE, of the London Borough of Camden, by Letters Patent of Garter and Clarenceux Kings of Arms dated 31 May 2018. In the same Patent Arms and Crest were granted in memory of her late husband Desmond John WILCOX, late of the same Borough, and to be borne and used by his descendants. College reference: Grants 181/161. The blazons are as follows:

Arms (illustrated left): Azure on a Pile Argent the point surmounted by the Flame proper of a Candle Or a Trumpet palewise the Bell upwards Gules between two Roses also Gules barbed seeded slipped and leaved proper.

Arms for Wilcox (illustrated right): Argent a Pile reversed bendwise Gules the point surmounted in dexter chief by a Sun in Splendour overall a three-masted Schooner in full sail Or the hull charged with a Barrulet Azure fracted with Portholes Or.

Crest for Wilcox: Upon a Helm with a Wreath Argent and Azure Within a Circlet of Oak Leaves erect Vert a Horse rampant Or. Mantled Azure doubled Or.

A pedigree registered at the College shows him to be sixth in descent from Overton Walton of Putnam County, Georgia, USA, who was born in North America and was stated in 1820 to be aged 45 years or over. Appointments

Society of Heraldic Arts: at the recent Annual General Meeting of this society Robert Noel, Lancaster Herald, was elected a Fellow, as were Timothy Noad and Robert Parsons, Herald Painters at the College of Arms.

Appearances

Order of the Garter: the annual service of this Order took place at Windsor Castle on 18 June 2018, in the presence of the Sovereign of the Order, Her Majesty The Queen. The Viscount Brookeborough and Lady Mary Fagan were invested and installed as Companions of the Order. The ceremonies and service were marshalled by Thomas Woodcock, Garter King of Arms, and the Officers of Arms were in attendance.

Presentations of Letters Patent: on behalf of the Kings of Arms, John Petrie, Rouge Croix Pursuivant, made the following recent presentations of Letters Patent. On 24 April 2018 he presented the Patent granting Arms, Crest and two Badges to the Girls' Public Day School Company for use by the Streatham and Clapham High School, London. On 2 May 2018 he presented the Patent exemplifying to Harper Adams University the Arms and Crest granted to the brothers Joseph Harrison Adams and Thomas Harper Adams, which were transferred by Her Majesty The Queen’s Royal Licence, in the presence of Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. On 29 May 2018, again on behalf of the Kings of Arms, he presented the Patent granting Arms, Crest and Supporters to Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, Northern Ireland. On 26 June 2018 he presented the Patent granting Arms, Crest and Badge to St Edward’s School, Oxford.

Corsham Civic Society: on 29 June 2018 Thomas Woodcock, Garter King of Arms, addressed this society on the subject of “Heraldry and the College of Arms”.

Standard Chartered Great City Race: a College of Arms team consisting of Lydia Birch, Clive Cheesman, Dennis Field and John Petrie, ran in this charitable 5-kilometre race in the City of London on 17 July 2018.

Recently Recorded Pedigrees

BROWNE: a pedigree has been registered which shows a descent of seven generations to the present day from Thomas Browne of the Bank of England, City of London; he married on 25 March 1804 Jane, daughter of James Rutherford of Hounam, Kelso, Scotland. Cross-referenced to Norfolk 17/39. College reference: Norfolk 52/156.

CHIDAMBARAM: a pedigree of four generations is headed by Muttaiya Annamalai Chidambaram, who died in 2000 in Tamil Nadu, India, having been married in 1938 to Abirami Chidambaram Chockalingam. College reference: Surrey 32/266.

DRAKE: a pedigree of four generations shows the descendants in male and female lines, of Sir Arthur Courtney Drake of Cheriton, Alresford, Hampshire (died 1996). These include members of the FREER and LOW families. College reference: Surrey 32/277.

VILLIERS: A pedigree of eight generations is headed by George Villiers, younger brother of Thomas (Villiers0, Earl of Clarendon. He married Therese only daughter of John (Parker), Baron Boringdon. The pedigree descends via their son Henry Montagu Villiers, Bishop of Durham (died 1861) and ends at the present day. Connected to THOMAS. THE BRITISH PAIN SOCIETY. Arms, Crest and Badge were granted to The Pain Society (also sometime known as the Intractable Pain Society of Great Britain and Ireland), by Letters Patent of the Kings of Arms dated 2 May 1995. Her Majesty The Queen was pleased to grant Her Royal Licence dated 27 June 2016, that the Arms so granted might be borne and used by The British Pain Society, together with Supporters. (College reference: I.85/325). The Arms, Crest and Badge were exemplified by the Kings of Arms by Certificate dated 24 February 2017 (College reference Grants 180/118). Supporters are now granted by Garter King of Arms by Letters Patent dated 28 February 2018. College reference: Grants 181/119.

UNIVERSITY OF PORTSMOUTH. Arms, Crest and Badge were granted to the Chairman and Councillors of the County Council of Hampshire for the use of Portsmouth Polytechnic by Letters Patent of the Kings of Arms dated 8 March 1982. Her Majesty The Queen was pleased to grant Her Royal Licence dated 17 October 2017, that the Arms so granted might be borne and used by the University of Portsmouth. (College reference: I.85/331). The Arms were exemplified by Certificate of the Kings of Arms dated 14 November 2017 (College reference: Grants 180/352).
