 Oriel
College Boat Club
A grant of a Badge was made to The Provost and
Scholars of the House of the Blessed Mary the Virgin
in Oxford commonly called Oriel College of the
Foundation of Edward the Second of famous memory
sometime King of England, for the use of Oriel
College Boat Club, the Tortoise Club and the Oriel
Society, by Letters Patent dated 20 April 2009 of
Garter, Clarenceux and Norroy & Ulster Kings of
Arms. A standard was exemplified, as illustrated
left. College reference: Standards 5/125.
The Badge is blazoned A Tortoise displayed the
shell circular Azure charged with two concentric
annulets Argent.
The Patent was presented to the Provost at Oriel on
30 May by Clive Cheesman, Rouge Dragon Pursuivant.
The grant was made possible by the gen-erosity of
Michael Goolden, an Orielensis and formerly member
of the college’s first eight.

Her
Majesty The Queen has been pleased to appoint Thomas Woodcock, LVO,
Norroy and Ulster King of Arms, to be Garter Principal King of Arms
upon the retirement of the present Garter, Peter Gwynn-Jones, CVO.
The appointment is to have effect from 1 April 2010.

pale Argent holding in the beak a maple leaf Gules.
Mantling: Azure doubled Argent.

Illustrated left is a portrait of Peter Gwynn-Jones, CVO,
Garter King of Arms, by Daphne Todd, OBE, a past President of the
Royal Society of Portrait Painters. Garter is depicted wearing his
tabard and carrying his staff of office, with a view of the dome of
St Paul’s Cathedral (which stands slightly to the north of the
College of Arms) in the background.
The
portrait was exhibited recently at an exhibition of Todd’s work at
Messum’s Cork Street, London, and also at the annual exhibition of
the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, held at Mall Galleries,
London between 7 and 23 May 2009.
The Order of the Garter:
the annual service of the Order took place on 15 June 2009 at St
George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, in the presence of its Sovereign,
Her Majesty The Queen. The Officers of Arms were in attendance.
Recent Lectures:
David
White, Somerset Herald and lately Chairman of the Heraldry Society,
delivered the Scriveners’ Company lecture on ‘The Baronets’ Battles
for a Badge’ to the society on 20 May 2009. Peter Gwynn-Jones,
Garter King of Arms, lectured at the Oxford and Cambridge Club, on 9
June 2009 on the subject of ‘Heralds and Heraldry’.
The Heralds’ Visitations:
an article by Dr Adrian Ailes appeared in The Coat of Arms,
journal of The Heraldry Society, volume 5:1 (2009), with the title
‘The development of the heralds’ visitations of England and Wales
1450-1600’. Subscriptions to this journal of heraldic and related
studies may be obtained

English, French and American gentility:
an article by François-Joseph Ruggiu entitled ‘Extraction, wealth
and industry: The ideas of noblesse and of gentility in the English
and French Atlantics (17th–18th centuries)’, appeared in the journal
History of European Ideas
volume 34:4 (2008). This article is based in part upon a study of
the records of grants of Arms maintained by the College of Arms.
Appointments in Scotland:
The Lord Lyon King of Arms has appointed the Hon. Adam Bruce as
Unicorn Pursuivant of Arms; he was previously Finlaggan Pursuivant
in service of the Clan Donald. Mark Dennis has been appointed Ormond
Pursuivant of Arms.
 Illustated
right is a page from a manuscript in the College of Arms,
dating from the reign of Henry VIII and depicting characteristic
heraldry of the period. This manuscript was probably compiled under
the direction of Sir Thomas Wriothesley, Garter (died 1534); the
page illustrated perhaps represents a record of Arms granted by

BUSH:
a pedigree of four generations shows the descendants in male and
female lines of Barnard Robert Swanton Bush (born 1912). Connected
with FARLEY, WIFFEN and SPIERS. College reference: Surrey 31/351.
CAVENDISH-BENTINCK:
a pedigree sets out children and grandchildren of William John
Arthur Charles James (Cavendish-Bentinck), Duke of Portland and
Baron Bolsover (born 1857). The entry also includes three
generations of the PARENTE family. Cross-referenced to Norfolk
18/72. College reference: Norfolk 51/128.
KINGTON:
a pedigree of nine generations is headed by Thomas Kington of the
parish of St Peter le Port, Bristol, who married in 1769 to Susannah
Goodwin. The entry descends to the present day via their great
grandson William Miles Nairne Kington of Montreux, Switzerland (died
1898). Connected with the families of JONES and MILLAR. College

LYNN:
a pedigree of seven generations shows a descent to the present day
from Henry Lynn or Linn of Brooke County, Virginia, USA, who was
born 11 January 1775 in Pennsylvania and who married Rebecca
daughter of Walter Cain. Connected to BOEHME of Mountain Brook,
Alabama, USA. College reference: Norfolk 51/161.
STUART:
a pedigree records the succession of peerages from Arthur (Stuart),
7th Earl Castle Stewart, of Castle Stuart, Co. Tyrone, Ireland (born
1889). Cross-referenced to an entry in Ulster’s Office recorded
pedigrees, and to Surrey 30/288. College reference: Peers 10/235.
Queen’s Remembrancer:
Her Majesty The Queen has been pleased to approve the Badge,
illustrated left, for this, the oldest judicial post in
existence. The first remembrancer was appointed in 1154 and
subsequently became an official of the medieval Court of Exchequer;
as such, the post is today the sole surviving element of the
apparatus of that court. The black-and-white checky roundel in the
new badge is a reference to this origin. For more information on the
