The
Armorial of Haiti:
this magnificent work was published by the College of Arms on 2 May
at a price of £45 (ISBN 978-09506980-2-1). The launch at the College
of Arms provided an opportunity for many of those most involved in
the project and some generous donors to see the original manuscript.
It was addressed by the Earl Marshal and by Clive Cheesman, Rouge
Dragon Pursuivant. The publication of the book was also marked in
the United States with an event on 30 May organized by the
College of Arms Foundation and held at the New York Genealogical
and Biographical Society, where Rouge Dragon spoke alongside
Professor David Geggus of the University of Florida, one of the
book’s patrons. For information on purchasing copies please visit

Who Do You Think You Are? Live:
This
important historical and genealogical event took place at Olympia in
London on 5-7 May this year. Approximately fifteen thousand people
attended the show. The College of Arms stand was at the centre of
the area devoted to repositories and official bodies, and was manned
by Officers and artists. A great many members of the public and
staff from other bodies had the opportunity to learn about the work
and activities of the College, and to see some of our highly skilled
heraldic artists at work. During the show, Peter O’Donoghue,
Bluemantle Pursuivant, appeared in a live Who Do You Think You
Are? event tracing the ancestors of Peter and Dan Snow, the
television presenters.
Earl Marshal’s Court:
His Grace the Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal, hosted a reception at
the College of Arms on 16 May to celebrate the completion of the
refurbishment and redecoration of the Earl Marshal’s Court. Many of
the generous benefactors towards the cost of the work were present
at this event, at which the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs of the City of
London were principal guests.
Irish Peers Association:
Peter Gwynn-Jones, Garter King of Arms, hosted a reception at the
College of Arms on 22 May for this body, which represents members of
the Peerage of Ireland. Irish Peers, who have not sat in the United
Kingdom House of Lords since 1961, are entitled to be enrolled on
the Roll of the Peerage, which was created by Royal Warrant dated 1
June 2004.
Amongst
the many heraldic manuscripts in the archives of the College of Arms
are a number of heraldic compilations, collections of coats of Arms
arranged in particular ways to serve different purposes. One type of
manuscript is the alphabet, where descriptions of the Arms in
blazon, or illustrations of the Arms, are arranged alphabetically by
surname. Such manuscripts enabled heralds, painters and others
swiftly to know something about the Arms of a particular person or
family. Another category is the ordinary: here the coats of Arms are
arranged by the devices shown upon them. These manuscripts, which
have been created by Heralds since medieval times, enable Arms to be
easily identified; they also assisted the heralds in designing new
and original Arms.
Illustrated above is an opening from Flower’s Ordinary
[College reference: 2G9 ff. 58v, 59], a manuscript of c. 1520 once
in the possession of William Flower (born c. 1498, died 1588),
Norroy King of Arms. The distinctive Arms of Mortimer, Earls of
March are in the top row of the left-hand page. The variations of
tincture and additions of charges shown here illustrate medieval
methods of differencing to indicate cadency or affinity.
So You Think You’re Royal?:
The
College of Arms featured in an episode (broadcast 28 May 2007) of
this television series on the channel Sky One, which seeks to trace
possible Royal or noble ancestors of present-day families. College
records were central to proving the Warner family’s descent from
Edward III.
The Order of the Garter:
the annual service of the Order took place on 18th June
2007 at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle in the presence of Her
Majesty The Queen. The Officers of Arms were in attendance; the
Secretary of the Order is Patric Dickinson, Richmond Herald, who is
responsible for organising the ceremonial aspects of the service.
Cambridge University Heraldic and Genealogical Society:
Peter Gwynn-Jones, Garter King of Arms, presented Letters Patent
granting Arms to
this society at a 50th anniversary dinner held at
Clare College, Cambridge on 9 June 2007.
BEVAN
of St John’s Wood, City of Westminster: a pedigree showing a descent
from Peter James Stuart Bevan (born 1901). The connection to
FANSHAWE is shown, as is that to
JEFFS. Three generations of the
Jeffs family are included, headed by Julian Jeffs of East Ilsley,
Berkshire. College reference: Surrey 31/271.
HORSEY
and DE HORSEY: a pedigree is
headed by Samuel Horsey of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, sometime Bath
King of Arms, who died in 1771. It descends via his daughter, only
child and heir Caroline, who married as her second husband Samuel
Kilderbee; and thence to the present day family of de Horsey of
Cambridgeshire. Cross-referenced to 10D14/48 and to
I.49/53
and 65. College reference: Norfolk 51/86.
LEONARD:
a pedigree of four generations, showing a descent from Jeremiah
Leonard of Castle Cary, Somerset, who married in 1936 Rosaleen
Oonagh daughter of Michael David Mellett. College reference: Surrey
31/272.
SYKES:
four generations are recorded, headed by William Henry Sykes of
Albion Street, Hyde Park, Middlesex, who married Elizabeth née Hay
in 1824. Descends to the son (born 1914) of William Ernest Sykes of
Forest Row, Sussex. College reference: Surrey 31/258.
Mill Hill School Foundation:
Arms were granted to the Trustees and Governing Body of Mill Hill
School by Letters Patent dated 25 September 1935. Following a
petition by Sir Robert Balchin, Knight, DL, Her Majesty was pleased
to grant a Royal Warrant dated 22 November 2006 permitting these
Arms to be used by Mill Hill School Foundation [College reference:
I.85/199]. The Arms were therefore exemplified to the Foundation by
a certificate of Garter, Clarenceux and Norroy and Ulster Kings of
Arms dated 12 January 2007 [College reference: Grants 172/118]. A
grant of a Crest and Badge was made to the Foundation by all three
Kings of Arms in Letters Patent dated 26 January 2007. College
reference: Grants 172/122.
Registrar of the College of Arms:
William Hunt, Windsor Herald, has been appointed to serve in this
capacity from 1 July 2007 by a Warrant of the Earl Marshal, in the
place of Timothy Duke, Chester Herald. The Registrar is responsible
amongst other duties for overseeing the creation of official
records. |
