The Arms illustrated left are those of Richard Warwick Hurford, Bishop of Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia, impaled by the Arms of the See of Bathurst. His personal Arms were granted 6 December 2004 by Garter, Clarenceux and Norroy and Ulster Kings of Arms. The agent was Windsor Herald.

The Arms are blazoned Azure a Dragon rampant Or the Wings of six membranes each charged on the underside with a Mullet that adjacent to the body of five points and each of the others of seven points all Gules holding in each forefoot a Bell Argent.

The Crest of Hurford (not illustrated) is Upon a Helm with a Wreath Or and Azure A Kookaburra close Azure beaked and legged Or supporting beneath the dexter wing a Pastoral Staff in bend sinister Sable the head and foot Or holding in the beak a Sprig of Wattle Or slipped and leaved Azure.

In the News

The Order of the Garter. The Right Honourable John Major, CH, former Prime Minister, and The Right Honourable Lord Bingham of Cornhill, High Steward of Oxford University and Senior Law Lord, former Lord Chief Justice and Master of the Rolls, have been appointed Knights Companion, and Lady Soames, DBE has been appointed a Lady Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. The new members will be installed on 13 June 2005, prior to the annual Service of the Order at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, when the Officers of Arms will be in attendance.

The High Court of Chivalry

Dr Richard Cust and Dr Andy Hopper of the Centre for Reformation and Early Modern Studies at the University of Birmingham are conducting a detailed study of the unpublished records of the Court of Chivalry held by the College of Arms for the period 1633-1641 when the Court was particularly active. This forms a long-running project which has been funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board. They recently delivered papers on their findings to date at a conference at York University entitled Cultures of Violence: Interpersonal Violence in Historical Perspective.

The illustration right is from an aquatint by J Bluck after Thomas Rowlandson and Augustus Charles Pugin, from Ackermann’s Microcosm of London, 1808; it shows the Court of Chivalry in session at the College of Arms, as it was rather fancifully imagined by later ages.

Dr Cust and Dr Hopper also led a seminar hosted by the Institute of Historical Research on 9 May 2005, where they discussed the history of the Court and the implications of these hitherto neglected records for the social and legal history of the period. Their paper examined the history of duelling as a social phenomenon of the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with the associated conceptions of honour and etiquette; it also looked at the ways in which actions in the Court of Chivalry might be employed as parts of the response to these social mores. The detailed records of cases from this period will be published on the Internet in association with the College of Arms, making them available to historians and members of the public alike. A Harleian Society volume relating to these records is also in the course of preparation.

Events and Appearances

The State Opening of Parliament. Following the dissolution of Parliament and the General Election, Her Majesty The Queen opened Parliament at Westminster on 17 May 2005. The Officers of Arms in ordinary and extraordinary were in attendance.

Lectures in the USA. Henry Paston-Bedingfeld, York Herald, recently delivered a lecture entitled ‘Grants of Armorial Bearings to American Institutions and Individuals’, to the English Speaking Union of Charleston, South Carolina, USA, and also to the College of Arms Foundation and the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society. Whilst in Charleston, Henry Paston-Bedingfeld, as a member of the Council of the Royal Society of St George, inaugurated the Carolinian Branch of the Royal Society of St George on 20 April 2005.

The Armorial of Haiti. At the invitation of the British Ambassador to the Dominican Republic and Haiti, Clive Cheesman, Rouge Dragon Pursuivant, recently paid a visit to Haiti. He delivered a lecture on the Armorial of Haiti and the project to publish this manuscript at Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on 14 March 2005. The invited audience included members of the staff of the Musée du Panthéon National (Haiti’s national museum) and other cultural and political bodies, as well as members of the Press and public.

2^nd International Colloquium of the Institut International d’Etudes Généalogiques et d’Histoire des Familles. Clive Cheesman, Rouge Dragon Pursuivant, attended this conference in San Marino on 31 March to 5 April 2005 on the themes ‘Le généalogie parmi les sciences’ and ‘Les genealogies falsifiées’. He delivered a paper entitled ‘La falsificazione genealogica in ambito inglese’, and also addressed the conference on the subject of genealogical research in San Marino.

Corporation of the City of London. William Hunt, Windsor Herald, has been re-elected to serve on the Court of Common Council of the City of London for the next four years.

Open House London. The College of Arms will be open to the public on Saturday 17^th September 2005 between 10 am and 4 pm, as part of the Open House London weekend. The last admittance will be at 3.30 pm; further details will be available from the Open House website.

MARJORIBANKS of co. Berwick. A seven generation pedigree showing the descent from Sir John Marjoribanks, created a baronet in 1815, and including connections with the Egerton, Bannister Strouts and Ghys families. PICKERSGILL of St Neots, co. Huntingdon. A five generation pedigree headed by Harry Pickersgill (later Harry Pickersgill Cunliffe) and descending via his daughter and coheir Enid Saffron, wife of Evelyn Hugh James Duberly. Royal Licence to Schroders PLC. Following a petition, a Royal Licence was granted on 25 October 2004 to Schroders PLC transferring to them the Arms granted in 1959 to Schroders Limited.
